From a high salary and job benefits to living in a unique culture and being able to travel the world, there are many reasons to teach English in China. In addition to why, many wonder how one can teach English in China. It’s important to not only choose the right path, but to be adequately prepared. In this article, we’re going to discuss the differences between a CELTA and a TEFL certificate, and which one is best for you.

Understanding CELTA and TEFL Courses

While both are teaching courses and certificates which are used within the same industry - TEFL - there are some key differences between the two.

TEFL

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. A TEFL certificate, therefore, is a certificate for teaching English to students whose first language is not English.

TEFL certification can come in a wide range of forms. Most TEFL certifications come in the form of online TEFL courses.

While the minimum requirement for many TEFL jobs are 120 hour TEFL certificates, they can be as short as 30 hours, or upwards to 500+ hours. The price of an online TEFL course can range from $0 USD to $1,000 USD, or even more for in-person TEFL courses. The quality or reputation of the course is not only determined by its content but also who it’s accredited by.

CELTA

The acronym 'CELTA' stood for “Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults”. However, it became a popular certification outside of teaching adults, and is now referred to as Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. However, this form of TEFL certification isn’t limited to teaching adults. Outside of obtaining a teaching license, the CELTA is one of the highest teacher trainings that a TEFL teacher can obtain. Costs vary from around $1,500 to $4,000 USD.

This Cambridge certification prepares teachers with thorough instructor-led training. While many TEFL certifications are self-paced, CELTA is more often than not done in-class or online with other tutors and teacher trainees.

What are the Differences Between CELTA and TEFL?

While both CELTA and a TEFL certification are enough to find TEFL jobs in China, there are many key differences to consider. Although one may be more prestigious than the other, it isn’t necessarily “better” depending on the teacher’s unique priorities and preferences.

CELTA

A CELTA is perfect for those who want to become the best teacher, and who seek high paid positions or a long career in TEFL. It's known for its in-depth level of education and its high workload. Starting out your TEFL career with a CELTA course will prepare you for a highly rewarding career teaching English in China. Highly sought after TEFL jobs - like those at international schools - often require teachers to have either a teaching license or a CELTA qualification.

  • Accreditation and recognition: As a Cambridge qualification, CELTA boasts accreditation and recognition of the highest order. Outside of obtaining a teacher’s license from your home country, becoming CELTA certified is one of the best ways to improve your resume and increase your salary potential for teaching in China.

  • Theory and practicum: Not only do you gain insight and develop extensive theory knowledge, you’ll be able to lead a real classroom at the end of your studies. This allows you to apply your knowledge in a real lesson, and you’ll receive feedback from a highly experienced teacher.

  • Structured lessons: Many teachers will benefit from attending classes and workshops with other teachers. Whether this is done online or in-person, CELTA offers a structured course which can help stay on track of their progress and keep momentum.

  • Peer observation: You’ll also be able to watch peers leading the classroom, which allows you to gain inspiration from unique lesson plans, and also to see what works - and what might not - in a live classroom.

TEFL

Generally, TEFL courses are less intense than CELTA courses. They offer much more flexibility, convenience, and affordability for inexperienced teachers. Because of this, many see TEFL courses are the safe way to dip your feet into the shallow end of TEFL without having to commit an enormous amount of energy, time, or money.

Here are the benefits of TEFL courses:

  • Flexibility & convenience: Many TEFL courses are taken because of their flexibility and convenience. Most TEFL courses (not all) are done online, and are completed in a self-paced manner. This is very convenient especially for students and working professionals who are unable to study during the day.

  • Affordability: Standard 120-hour TEFL courses are significantly cheaper than CELTA courses, making it more attractive for teachers who are on a tight budget.

  • Accreditation: While TEFL courses are typically less reputable than CELTA, they can still provide valuable insight and education. Many courses are accredited by reputable bodies who can attest to its efficacy in the teaching world.

Which Certification is Best for Teaching in China?

While it is difficult to argue against the reputation and quality of a CELTA course, it isn’t necessary for all TEFL jobs in China. If you want to teach at the highest quality school, such as a university or international school, you should opt for a CELTA.

However, if you’re interested in teaching in public schools, where you can experience a more smooth transition into life in China where the workload is generally less intense, a TEFL certification may be the right choice. While employers for high-paid require highly qualified teachers, many public schools welcome entry-level teachers who are TEFL certified with open arms.

Who Should Choose CELTA?

Consider choosing a CELTA if:

  • You want to find the highest paid TEFL jobs possible

  • You want to become the best teacher possible

  • You see yourself in the TEFL industry for years to come

Who Should Choose TEFL?

Consider choosing a TEFL certificate if:

  • You’re unsure about teaching as a long-term career

  • You aren’t worried about teaching for the biggest schools

  • You’re looking for affordable and convenient ways to become certified

Teach English in China

The TEFL industry in China offers a wealth of benefits for teachers, whether you’re TEFL certified or CELTA certified. While the CELTA course may offer a more rigorous schedule and in-depth level of education, a 120-TEFL course is still enough to help teachers find a successful career and life teaching English in China. The most important thing to consider when making a decision is your goals, budget, and commitment to the TEFL industry!
